Selling a Home during the Winter Season

Selling a Home during the Winter Season

For a large portion of the country, winter means the real estate market tends to slow down. Families with children, who don’t want to move during the school term, and cooler temperatures can send potential home buyers into hibernation.

Just because the market slows down, does not mean it comes to a complete stop. The coming 2017 spring is expected to be a strong seller’s market, with many first-time home buyers searching for affordable housing. Some of the early birds are bound to take advantage of the winter months to start looking for a place to call their own.

Here are a few tips to give your home an edge during the winter selling season:

  1. Spruce up the outside. Curb appeal is something that matters all year long. In areas where landscaping is affected, it can be tough to achieve the best look on the outside of the house. Try adding some potted evergreen shrubs by the front entry and extra lighting around the landscaping and driveway.

  2. Light up the inside. Make the most of any front-facing windows you have by raising the blinds and turning on all the lights. When potential home buyers stand in the front yard, they should be able to visualize the warm, cozy life they could be having inside.

  3. Touch up the paint. A clean, freshly painted front door and trim beckon potential buyers to come inside. Consider painting the door or shutters a bright color to stand out.

  4. Highlight cozy features inside the home. If you have a fireplace, make sure the mantel is staged and the fire is lit when prospective buyers walk through. Emphasize the coziness of the living room, den or great room with green houseplants and fresh or silk flower arrangements.
